Ann restaurant
Have you ever tried Korean Food? I guess many of you have no idea what Korean food looks like. Usually people who think of Asian food, they come up with Japanese, Vietnamese or Chinese. But Korean foods are very various and special. If you haven’t tried it, there is a nice restaurant that you can have Korean food, named Ann.
Location
There are several branches of Ann in Kiel, those are:
Ann Korean bistro-café: am Dreiecksplatz: Holtenauer Str. 2-8, 24105 Kiel
Ann Japanese restaurant: Holtenauer Str. 158, 24105 Kiel
Ann Korean bistro-café: am Alten Markt: Alter Markt 8, 24103 Kiel
Ann Curry&Gimbap: Kleiner Kunberg 2-6, 24103 Kiel
If you want to try Korean food, you should go to Dreiecksplatz, the first one. It’s the only one which has various Korean menu. Other branches are mostly Japanese restaurant with Sushi or Ramen.
Atmosphere
The restaurant is large, cozy and modern style, so it is a nice place both for dates, or meeting friends. It is quite calm inside without music, so it would be also nice for study.
Foods
If you prefer meat, I highly recommend you a Frittiertes Hähnchen and Gewürztes Hähnchen. Those are fried chicken in Korean style. Frittiertes Hähnchen is a chicken with soy sauce and Gewürztes Hähnchen is with Yang-nyum, the Korean chilly sauce. Korean really likes fried chicken. As K-pop and Korean wave became popular, there was also a ‘Korean chicken wave’ in China, many tourists visit Korea to try Korean chicken. Korean chicken is a bit different with Western-style chicken like KFC, because it is less junky and oily. Therefore I’m confident that you would love it. If you order a chicken, rice and salad comes out together. In Korea, people often eat chicken with rice, and it’s called ‘chi-bap.’ It was very famous among young generations. I guess many of you haven’t tried that. But believe me, rice goes really well with chicken.
If you are vegetarian, or not feeling like eating meat, I recommend Bibimbap. It is a rice with various vegetables and sauce. You can choose between tuna, Bulgogi, and tofu. You can also choose the sauce in it. If you don’t like spicy one, you can choose soy sauce. And if you like spicy taste, or want to challenge, you can choose gochujang, the Korean pepper sauce. I’ve been there several times with my foreign friends and they all said that gochujang was not that spicy, so I think you could give a try. It is quite similar with real Bibimbap in Korea, but the difference is that there is a sea weed in it. So if you don’t like sea weed, you should tell not to put it while you order.
Another recommendation for you is Japchae. It is a noodle with several vegetables and meat. The noodle is cellophane noodle, which is made with sweet potato starch, and its’ texture is very special. In the old days, Korean ate Japchae at big parties and festivals in the town. We still cook Japchae in family gatherings or on Chuseok, a Korean Thanksgiving Day.
Beverages
Ann is a restaurant and also a café, so if you aren’t hungry, you can enjoy a coffee or tea. I recommend Malcha Latte, you would love it if you a Malcha-lover. There are also Korean traditional beverages. I highly recommend Shikhae. It is made with rice, and it is very sweet. My friend from Switzerland tried Shikhae, and he loved it so much that he tried to make it himself at home. I think you would love it too. There is also Sujeonggwa. a sweet beverage with cinnamon. It was an haute dessert for kings and royals back in the days. But now you can try it in Ann! And of course, there are familiar menus too such as coffee and tea.
