Brooks Café Achter de Mur

Garden with a view on the café

Enjoy coffee, tea and cake or a savoury meal in the garden of Brooks Café Achter de Mur, one of Germany's best cafés near the Plöner See. Good and affordable pieces of cake, which are of such a monstrous size, that you can order half a piece, too.

The café

The café lies in a small village Bosau, which is a Luftkurort (health resort or air spa), next to the Plöner See. The owner Lisa Brooks is a trained goldsmith and bakes most of the cakes herself or with the help of her employees. Don't be fooled into thinking these cakes have hobby level quality! Der Feinschmecker, a German gourmet magazine, nominated the café in 2014 and 2018 as one of Germany's best cafés. Even If you are not into cake, you'll find a hearty meal on the menu.

Beside a wide range of cakes they offer hearty meals like salads, open-faced sandwiches with ham or cheese and daily changing soups and quiche.

The building itself is rather small and the interior design reminds of my grandmother's living room, but in a clean and pleasant way. Mrs. Brooks's grandfather bought the building, which was constructed in 1904 as a bakery, to use it as a free housing for farm workers. Since 1991 after a refurbishment it has been used as a café.

The garden

Outside you will find a well-kept garden with lots of blooming flowers, mostly purchasable handcrafted garden decoration and tea accessories as well as sparrows jumping around everywhere. I highly recommend selecting a table in the garden, because it is one of the best parts of this café. I have been there on the 27th of October. Might have been a little cold you think? True, but the café also offers free blankets and heaters mounted under a gigantic sunshade. No matter if it is too sunny, too cold or too rainy, you can get a comfortable spot.  If the weather is unpleasant, you can still go inside and enjoy a comfy living room.

If I haven't convinced you already that this café is worth a visit, I should mention that you can also buy jewelry and the tea you may have enjoyed there. Talking about tea, I should mention that Lisa Brooks is a tea enthusiast and that you can get a wide variety of tea (almost 50 types of tea) within the café. In general I prefer coffee, but I recommend trying the Milky Oolong or the white tea Elegance.

Opening hours, location & reservations

The café is open from March till the beginning of November on Wednesday till Sunday starting from 12 pm to 6 pm (in 2019 they no longer stay open until 7pm).

You can make reservations via phone, which I recommend during the school holidays and on weekends.
