The Fischbar offers a broad range of dishes with daily fresh fish, which you can enjoy at a small beach in one of the beach chairs with an open view on the fjord in Kiel. Of course, you can get different variations the traditional dish Fischbrötchen (fish sandwich) here aswell, which is a very common dish in northern Germany.
The Fischbar
The Fischbar focuses on the separate ingredients and tries to highlight every aspect and taste of every single ingredient. That’s why the utter fresh fish, which you can get as fish and chips, too, is not hidden within any breading. Fresh fish is delivered every morning. If you are an early bird, it may however be possible, that not every fish is already delivered by then. At the coast the available fish is usually a lot fresher in general, due to shorter transport routes, but this is almost as fresh as it gets. Getting a Fischbrötchen here sounds like a good advise, doesn’t it?
Some of the dishes may vary, because they offer seasonal dish like herring pickled in a red wine sauce, too. Another reason for seasonally changing dishes, may be that they are part of Feinheimisch. This is a regional network of agricultural producers, gastronomers, private members and industrial sponsors, who focus on fresh and high-quality foods as well as, amongst other things, sustainable production.
You can order and pick up your dish at the counter of the Fischbar, which has a dark wood panelling and looks like a habour shack or a street food truck.
After your order is ready you can take a seat on one of the wooden chairs, benches or beach chairs. There you can enjoy a holiday feeling, bury your bare feet in the sand of an artificial beach, listen to the seagulls and have a great view on the fjord.

The Fischbrötchen
If you are in Kiel or at the coast, I highly recommend getting a Fischbrötchen rather here than somewhere else. Not everyone likes the taste of herring. I suggest getting a Fischbrötchen with salmon, if you aren’t familiar with the different fish types.
Fun fact: Since 2011 there is a World Fischbrötchen Day in Schleswig-Holstein every first Saturday in May.
It is not just any traditional German dish, but rather a maritime cultural asset.
Miscellaneous
Visiting the Fischbar can be perfectly combined with a walk at the esplanade (Kiellinie) and a trip with the ferry.
It may be worth looking out for postcards at the Fischbar, because they print funny postcards on a regular basis for advertiseíng purposes. These cards usually make fun of popular idioms, for instance “I don’t give a ship”, “Fish and ships”, “I whaly like you” or “Time to re-Lachs”. Some old prints can be found here.
